The Monastery to Small Petra

1 Day

We will trek through Petra to the basin, where will start the ascent of 840 well trodden steps leading up to the Monastery. The path winds its way up the mountains side with bedouin selling their souvenirs and plenty of places to sit and rest and enjoy the views. the top is a wide open plateau dominated by the hugely impressive structure of what is known as The Monastery or Ad-Deir.

This is one of the most spectacular structures in Petra. Here we will take a well earned rest and some free time to climb to some of the view points aptly named “the end of the world view”, as this is how you feel when you look out across the desert of Wadi Araba. After some rest time, we will start the descent from the back entrance of Petra. This is a little trodden tourist path, more used by the bedouin leaving Petra and returning to the Small Petra region. The path curves along the mountain edge, again giving spectacular views across the desert and black mountains.

As we descend you will see where bedouin still farm the land or graze the goats. As we come back down the mountain edge we will cross the lower land to our stop for dinner. Here we will have a chance to enjoy the sun setting and then the starry evening sky, while relaxing by the fire and enjoying a delicious cooked dinner. You will be transferred back to your hotel later in the evening.

Small Petra To The Monastery

1 Day

We will transfer you to the smaller site in Petra known as Little Petra – or Siq al-Barid (the cold canyon), where we will have a chance to explore this lesser visited site and see the suburb of Petra – believed to be where traders visiting Petra were housed.

After exploring this site, we will begin the trek to the Monastery. This route takes us across areas of land that Bedouin herders still use, before we start the climb up the ancient Nabatean stairs which have been carefully renovated, towards the Monastery. As we climb, the views are magnificent out across the black mountains towards the desert of Wadi Araba.

As we near the plateau, you will begin to see facade of the Monastery appear, before its full grandeur is exposed.

The Monastery is a misnomer, and was more likely a temple dedicated to Obodas I who reigned in 1st century BC, but it has gained this name possibly due to crosses being carved into the rock.

There are plenty of nooks and crannies to explore on this plateau as well as some terrific view points – most aptly named “end of the world” as this is how it feels when you are there.

There is also a cafe appropriately sited with a view towards this grand facade, to take a well earned rest and refreshments.

We will then descend the main staircase back into the site of Petra, where you can have free time to further explore or begin a slow exit though the Siq.

The trek to the summit including the visit to Little Petra will take around 3 hours.

Wadi El Ghweir

2 Days

Day 1

A full day trek through the beautiful canyon of Wadi El Ghweir.

We transfer from Petra to nearby Shobak where we will descend into the canyon. At the top of the canyon the scenery is rugged and dry, with corridors of natural rock to wander through and occasional boulders to clamber over. As we descend further we see more water and the landscape starts to become more lush and tropical. Depending on the rainfall can depend on how deep the water we have to pass through is. We will stop halfway in a shaded area for a welcome lunch break before continuing through this ever widening canyon, before emerging into the desert of Wadi Araba.

Here transport will be waiting to take us into the sand dunes where we will camp for the night enjoying a tasty homemade traditional bedouin dinner and a chance to marvel at the millions of stars. The next morning after breakfast, we will transfer back to Petra taking approximately 1.5 hours.

There is also a cafe appropriately sited with a view towards this grand facade, to take a well earned rest and refreshments.

We will then descend the main staircase back into the site of Petra, where you can have free time to further explore or begin a slow exit through the Siq.

The trek to the summit including the visit to Little Petra will take around 3 hours.

Day 2

The next morning after breakfast we will transfer back to Petra using the Namla road where we will have several photo opportunities and a chance to enjoy the spectacular views across Wadi Araba desert.

We will walk around 5 to 6 hours with a rest on the way before arriving at our camp mid-canyon, for the night,

After enjoying a delicious home cooked dinner, you can rest well underneath a star studded sky listening to the water running through the canyon.

Complete Petra

3 Days

Day 1

On the first day we will visit Petra the classic way, via the ancient Siq to experience fully your first sighting of the Treasury – this massive well preserved facade carved into the rock face. You can imagine the feeling explorers had when they first came across this breathtaking piece of architecture.

We will continue through the small Siq, admiring further tombs and carvings, towards the Wadi where this ancient city opens up.

All around you are tombs carved from the rock face to admire.

We will take a rest stop halfway through the Wadi for some lunch and admire the facade of the Royal tombs.

After lunch, we will climb up to the Royal tombs, and have a chance to explore. Admiring the colours of the rock and the amazing acoustics in the Urn tomb.

Passing by the Silk tomb, Corinthian tomb and Palace tomb, we find the stairs to take us to Khubtha mountain. The stairs have been carefully renovated and we climb into the canyon before rounding the mountain to some amazing views across the site of Petra.

At the top of the staircase we can see further ancient places of sacrifice before descending into a small valley to the final point where we can have magnificent views of the Treasury from above. Here we will take a well earned rest and admire the views.

We then return the same way, climbing the valley before descending the stairs, but we will now trek across the Midthlim passing by Septimius Severus tomb and further tombs carved along the valley before making a slow ascent towards the village of Um Saiyhoun ( the village housing the bedouin of Petra). We will pass by further Christian tombs, before climbing a path carved into the multi coloured rocks of Petra.

On arrival to the village we will transport you to a camp in Little Petra where we shall enjoy a splendid dinner and sleep for one night.
