Petra To Wadi Rum

We will have an early start after breakfast driving approximately 3.5 hours to Petra.

After a brief in and quick lunch break, we will drive to Small Petra where we will hike the back entrance to the Petra. This walk takes us around the mountain edge on a newly renovated path and stairs, with magnificent views down to the desert of Wadi Araba, before turning into a valley to the view of the Monastery of Petra.

Continuing our exploration of this fabulous site, we descend the stairs to the ancient city centre of Petra with its Roman and Nabatean ruins and views towards the Royal tombs carved into the mountain, before slowly winding our way through the site to the infamous Treasury and exiting viz the Siq – a 1.2km long winding canyon of many colours.

Over evening dinner we will discuss the upcoming hike.

Hiking Day 1 – Hiking Distance – 22km – Hiking Time – 6 to 8 hours

We will head back into Petra before heading South of the site towards Wadi Sabra, a relatively unknown archaeological site with its small amphitheatre before heading out along a ridge with fabulous views of the Wadi ( valley) below. Descending to our camp for the night at Gaa’Mreibed

Gaa’ Mreibed to Wadi El Saif – Hiking distance: 14 km – Hiking time: 4 – 5 hours

Heading south along a paved road for a short distance before we enter a colourful dark canyon, before exiting along old donkey trails. The scenery changes along the way to beautiful red and white sandstone cliffs before we arrive to our next wild camp site.

Wadi Al Saif  to Wadi Msheiza – Hiking Distance: 13 km – Hiking Time: 5 – 6 hours

Our next hiking day takes us out of the valley and over a pass into the next valley ( Wadi), amongst wild mountain ranges. Continue along Wadi Msheiza to our next wild camp.

Wadi Msheiza to Wadi Heimar- Hiking Distance: 12.5km – Hiking Time: 5 to 6 hours

Leaving the camp we head into a short canyon before following old donkey trails into a beautiful coloured canyon. Exiting we arrive at a magnificent viewpoint of the valleys before reaching another sandstone canyon. Exiting into our first sand dunes before heading towards our next camp for the night.

Wadi Heimar to Humayma – Hiking Distance: 22km – Hiking Time: 8- 9 hours

Leaving our final wild camp site, we head along the Wadi with its changing geology of coloured sandstone and granite, with water springs and high cliffs. This is a very scenic day as we wind our way along the canyon before exiting and meeting our transport to Wadi Rum where we will sleep in a fixed camp, take a shower and relax under the stars of Wadi Rum.

After breakfast in our fixed camp in Wadi Rum we will start our return journey to the North of Jordan, heading along the Dead Sea Highway where we can see the basket of Jordan, with most produce grown in this region, before arriving to the Dead Sea at 400m below sea level. We will have the opportunity to take a dip in the Dead Sea  – a very strange experience – floating at the lowest point in the world. After a lunch break, we continue to Madaba for our final night in Jordan.

There will be a group transfer to the airport, or you can opt to extend your stay in Jordan to explore further.
